Thoughts about my experience with the CBS
My journey with the CBS began 16 years ago in September 1992. Initially, I was encouraged by a pastoral associate at my parish to explore what was then a new program in this area. It was a direction I seemed to be seeking. With the support of a friend, who was also a seeker, I embarked on this journey for a greater knowledge of the scriptures. I view my four years with the program, as well as my continued ties with it, as life changing. The experience has greatly influenced my own spritual growth and has given me opportunities to share this with others. It has also whetted my appetite for "more".
Since completing the program in 1996, I have taken advantage of the opportunities provided for additional study, such as the annual Day of Reflection in the Spring and the Fall Study Day. In addition, I have eagerly anticipated other opportunities to share with other graduates when these have been made available. Currently, this includes a monthly study of the Gospel of John. Last year I audited the second year course in New Testament to keep myself current.
How have I put this knowledge to use? First and foremost, I have been associated with the RCIA program at Blessed Sacrament in Buffalo for 11 years. Since the process is lectionary based, I continue to read and study scripture in order to give participants proper information. I also belong to a weekly faith sharing group where I am frequently able to contribute in a meaningful way. Most importantly, knowledge of scripture and the meaning behind its words have given me insight into the faithful, enduring, compassionate love God has for us and the way God intends we should live in relationship with him/her and with one another. I have been challenged to live my faith to the fullest. For this I am proudly thankful to the CBS and especially to its most capable leader, Barbara Shanahan.
